Ascot Racecourse

Since 1711, Ascot Racecourse has been home to the world’s most famous race meeting, Royal Ascot.

In October 2004 Ascot announced it was to undertake a major redevelopment programme costing £200 million, the largest programme of its type anywhere in Europe.

The focal point of the redevelopment is undoubtedly the new Ascot Racecourse Grandstand, with its distinctive design, use of natural light, impressive galleria and state-of-the-art facilities; the new Grandstand is second to none. Speed and ease of access for racegoers have also been incorporated in to the design, 22 escalators have been strategically positioned to take patrons direct from Concourse to higher levels – without having to stop at each floor. Consequently the Parade Ring and viewing Lawns, as well as other facilities are easily and quickly accessible to all racegoers.

As the historic racing venue enters a new era, Liftout is proud to have been sub-contracted to arrange the installation of all 22 of these escalators.

Each of the 6 12m Rise Escalators at 30.5 meters in length, were truly vast, Liftout therefore decided that it would be more practical (and safer) to transport these escalators, there were actually 28 sections/units to transport to site. Each one then had to be manoeuvred with care and precision into its relevant position within the shell of the new Grandstand and installation undertaken and completed accordingly.

Liftout’s original start date to commence work on site was set at 26th September 2005. However, due to various problems on site with Main Contractors, Liftout was not able to start until 6 weeks later than scheduled (7th November 2005).

Despite this six week delay, Liftout’s team still had to work towards their handover date of early April 2006. Liftout also had to work alongside numerous other contractors each of whom were undertaking their own aspect of the fit out of the new Grandstand.

(The new Grandstand officially opened on the first day of the Royal Ascot Meeting in June 2006 – so deadlines for everyone were extremely tight!)

Throughout the installation process Liftout was awarded the ‘Team Safety Award’ for December 2005, for their safe working practices on site. No mean achievement!
