Escalator Installation – Heathrow T5
Escalators 9 & 10 Serving apron level to departures level
To install 6 Schindler escalators into the Terminal 5 TTS Link tunnel, all units split into 3 sections, top, middle and bottom. All delivered Air side via a window at apron level and lowered down onto the TTS platform during daytime hours. The sections were taking across the TTS live train track in night time hours onto the centre platform and lowered down once again to the minus 4 level TTS level link tunnel.
The escalators were then transported from terminal C to terminal A, and then to Terminal B via the TTS link tunnel using the 25E Valla Crane and skates.
The sections were joined in each well and lifted into position and then fully built with all balustrades and profiles before commissioning and testing.
The first 6 escalators were delivered, joined, installed and fully built including commissioning and testing within a 2 week period with day and night shift work to meet this very tight timescale.
Escalators 7, 8, 9 and 10 were installed at a later date towards the end of the project were we had to work extra shifts and weekends to meet the deadline handover date.
During the installation of escalators 7, 8, 9 & 10, the site engineers won the MACE safety award for September 2014 and were awarded vouchers to spend in local stores.
Liftout Project Manager, John Bostock was also awarded the Safe Contractor award in November 2014 for all the work carried out during the installation period for this project.
